E-text books contain digitally stored text, that can be read in various ways, e.g. with speech synthesizers, screen magnification, or on a braille panel.
The electronic text is distributed on a cd-rom disc.
In Sweden, any person with a print disability may borrow or buy TPB’s e-text books from municipal or school libraries.
Textview
In order to use TPB’s e-text books the Textview programme is needed. Textview is provided by TPB. Textview can be downloaded or ordered free of charge.
Textview can be used on any modern pc. The programme is available in both DOS and Windows versions. The Windows version includes a simple screen reading function that works with any speech synthesizer using Microsoft SAPI 4.
Textview is available in both Swedish and English versions. For the preparation of Textview books there is a special utilities package. All programmes are free of charge, but the programmes may not be copied (TPB is copyright holder).
Some useful functions
A Textview book is organized much like a printed book with a table of contents, text, and index. From any heading in the table of contents or the index there is direct access to the same heading or page in the text, by simply pressing the “Enter” key.
A text search comes in handy in order to find the wanted information. One can also search for a specific page or find out what the current page or chapter is.
Links are used for accessing notes, pictures, picture descriptions etc. It is possible to export passages from a book to a word processor, and also place bookmarks and make personal notes.
Protection
Textview uses encryption. Copying is allowed but restricted.
